Explore the Neighborhood Around 44 Carmel Ave
Pacifica sits directly on the Pacific Coast in northern San Mateo County, just south of the San Francisco city limits. It's a 15 to 20 minute drive to downtown San Francisco via Highway 1 (the Cabrillo Highway), yet feels worlds away. This is a coastal community where over half of the land is protected open space, with more than one thousand acres belonging to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Learn more at Visit Pacifica and the City of Pacifica neighborhood guide.
This home is in the Sharp Park neighborhood, one of Pacifica's most pedestrian-friendly and beach-adjacent communities. Sharp Park is an older neighborhood with character, featuring a mix of converted summer cottages and modern custom-built homes set along narrow, tree-lined streets with windswept Monterey pines.
Palmetto Avenue, the neighborhood's main commercial street, is a quaint shopping district for strolling and snacking. In summer, the coastal waters come alive with migrating birds, whales, dolphins, and fish, all visible from the beach and nearby trails. Every September, Palmetto Avenue hosts Fog Fest, Pacifica's signature annual community festival, drawing over 65,000 attendees for live music, local arts and crafts, food vendors, and the legendary Fog Cutter cocktail, with proceeds benefiting local nonprofits.
Beaches, Pier and Coastal Trails
Sharp Park Beach: A distinctive stretch of coast known for its rare black sand (colored by the mineral magnetite), with a half-mile promenade atop the sea wall connecting the pier to Mori Point. Free parking and free entry.
Pacifica Municipal Pier: An L-shaped fishing pier stretching more than 1,000 feet into the Pacific, with a café at the entrance. Among the Bay Area's best spots for fishing and crabbing, with salmon and striped bass in summer and Dungeness crab in winter. No fishing license required for pier fishing. Open daily, 4 AM to 10 PM.
Mori Point: Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, accessible on foot heading south from the promenade. Trails lead up to a ridge with sweeping coastal views. Wildflowers bloom in spring, and humpback whales can be spotted offshore during migration seasons.
Pacifica Coastal Trail: A wide, mostly flat path paralleling the waterfront, ideal for walking, jogging, and biking.
Rockaway Beach: A short drive south, with its own plaza, boardwalk, and cluster of restaurants and shops.
Hiking options extend in every direction from the front door. Head south to Mori Point, north toward Manor, or east into the coastal hills.
Dining, Coffee and Shopping
Everyday essentials and favorite restaurants are within pedestrian distance. Oceana Market has fresh fruits, veggies, deli items, gluten-free products, and everything needed for healthy eating at home. For dining out, Cafe Pacifica, Pacifica Thai, and Go Sushi are all a short stroll away. Palmetto Avenue and Francisco Boulevard form the commercial heart of Sharp Park, with over a dozen restaurants and cafés. See the full directory at Visit Pacifica's restaurant page.
A few more local favorites:
Chit Chat Cafe at the Pier: Coffee and snacks right at the entrance to the Pacifica Pier; a second Chit Chat location sits at the north end of Pacifica with ocean views.
A Grape in the Fog: Pacifica’s neighborhood wine bar, offering boutique wines by the glass, flight, or bottle, plus cheese and charcuterie.
Sharp Park Restaurant: A longtime local gathering spot at the Sharp Park Golf Course clubhouse, known for breakfast, Sunday brunch, and Friday/Saturday prime rib dinners.
Moonraker: Second-floor dining at the Lighthouse Hotel with sweeping ocean views, classic seafood, and an oyster bar.
Sharp Park offers direct access to Highway 1 (Cabrillo Highway) for a 15 to 20 minute drive into San Francisco or down the coast toward Half Moon Bay. SamTrans bus service connects Sharp Park to the Daly City BART station for transit access to downtown San Francisco. Silicon Valley is accessible via I-280 to the east.
