Valentine's Day is right around the corner on February 14th and like most of you we've been running around planning THE perfect evening, one that comes from the bottom of our heart. In fact, we were so busy that we forgot to tell our loyal readers about the most fantastic Valentine's Day event in all of San Francisco: Spin the Bottle NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences. So here we are writing a last minute blog post about how to celebrate Valentine's Day with the perfect evening at the California Academy of Sciences! (Rest assured, we have time to write now that the big stuff is under control; the chocolate has been purchased, the candles are ready to be lit and the meal has been arranged.)
Every Thursday night, California Academy of Sciences throws down an epic party called "Nightlife" and this Thursday will be no different just because it's a (quasi) Holiday. Whatever you think about Valentine's Day -- how there really wasn't a St. Valentine who wrote love letters while in prison (there were actually a few martyrs named Valentine but did they all write love letters?), how it's a scam hatched by Hallmark and chocolate makers so they could sell more cards and chocolate, how the Catholic church basically stole and renamed the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia -- you just can't pass this up: Valentine's Day and San Francisco Beer Week wrapped up in one! Let's be honest, listening to a live talk by Carol Queen while drinking a glass of Lagunitas *IS* love to many people and rightly so.
For tickets, more of the nitty gritty details and the times of the Love Lectures and the Dance Party Dance-Off, check out the Nightlife website.
Here is a quick rundown from the hosts:
Spin the Bottle NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences
Thursday, February 14th, 2013, 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm at California Academy of Sciences (map)
Celebrate Valentine’s Day and Beer Week in one fell swoop. Taste your way through a beer hall populated with the likes of Almanac Beer Co. (Biere de Chocolat, anyone?), Anchor Brewing, Anderson Valley Brewing Company, Drake’s Brewing, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Pac Brew Lab, and many more.
Center for Sex and Culture founders Carol Queen and Robert Lawrence will deliver fascinating talks in the Forum with guest Midori. In the East Pavilion, sample sweet treats from Whole Foods, make a good old fashioned valentine at SCRAP’s craft table, and stop by the Photoboof for posterity’s sake.
In the aquarium, enjoy “gold classics” being spun by Sweet Cheeks DJs Loco and Mawkus in the coral reef, and strike up a conversation about extreme mating in the animal kingdom while wandering through Animal Attraction. In the Piazza, Hard French DJs Carnita and Brown Amy will whip up a soul storm, topped with grown-up board games and a few surprises.
RSVP on the Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences Facebook page.
AND...if you're still not sold on this whole "Celebrate Love Once a Year" thing, 7x7 has you covered with their Anti-Valentine's Day Agenda. There is nothing like a good old fashioned solo game of archery or a hardcore capoeira workout on a regular, nothing-special-about-this-day, Thursday night.
