San Francisco Neighborhood Spotlight: Trendy Hayes Valley Real Estate

February 23, 2017

The highly desirable Hayes Valley neighborhood in San Francisco is small enough to get to know your neighbors, but is close to plenty of attractions within the city. You get the best of both worlds in this trendy neighborhood: The ability to make connections within your community and the freedom to easily explore the city of San Francisco. See more details about Hayes Valley real estate below to learn why this neighborhood is a San Francisco real estate hot spot!

Why Choose Hayes Valley Real Estate

Hayes Valley is known as much for its focus on community as it is for its trendy redevelopment. Old and new intersect in this neighborhood; you'll hang out with lifelong residents, trendy newcomers, and plenty of visitors just passing through.

The neighborhood is very well known for its focus on artistic integrity. You'll see a great mixture of street art, high-end fashion, and classic architecture here. There are no rules in this neighborhood when it comes to creativity — just check out the artistic sculptures in Patricia’s Green, the local neighborhood green space and park.

Famed for its cafe culture, San Francisco doesn’t disappoint with Hayes Valley. Coffee lovers will appreciate the large array of coffee shops. You can easily find a fancy pour over, a great Americano, or a simple cup of coffee in this hood, including a Blue Bottle Coffee location tucked away on Linden Street.

The area is quiet and calm with a little bit of buzz (not just from the coffee). You can also easily get to other neighborhoods for livelier activities. Haight Ashbury, the Castro, and the Mission District are all a stone's throw from this San Francisco real estate gem.

Focus on Hayes Valley Community

This area of San Francisco is as rich with history as any other. Originally, the Ohlone Native American tribe settled here and made this area home. The neighborhood was at one time covered with meadows, wildflowers, and plenty of nature. Though the neighborhood is all urban now, you can still see some of the throwbacks to nature in the community gardens, fava bean trees, and green spaces.

Juan Bautista, a Spanish explorer, eventually settled the area in 1776 and forever changed the future of the neighborhood. In the mid-1800s, Italian immigrants set up settlement in the region. You can still see some of the evidence of this culture in the neighborhood with the high concentration of Italian restaurants serving up plates of homemade spaghetti. Before it broke off and became its own neighborhood, Hayes Valley was connected to the Fillmore District, an African American enclave and the family that gave the neighborhood its name: The Hayes.

Getting In and Out of Hayes Valley

Getting in, out, and around Hayes Valley is super easy thanks to the convenient public transportation and access to the 101 freeway onramp at Octavia.

Hayes Valley is served by the San Francisco MUNI buses. The MUNI bus 21 can get you over to the San Francisco Ferry Building as well as all the way past Golden Gate Park. The MUNI buses 5, 6, 22, and 71 also run through the neighborhood. The buses run north and south as well as east and west, so you never need to walk too far before getting to and from your destination.

If driving is more your speed, there's plenty of access to local roads and highways. You can easily get in and out of the neighborhood on the 101. Local access roads are easy to navigate and run on the grid system.

Of course, the best way to explore the neighborhood is on foot. Hayes Valley is lined with quaint streets that look like they've been ripped from the pages of a Norman Rockwell calendar. Residents usually prefer to explore the neighborhood by either foot or bicycle. You'll wave hello to friendly neighbors here every day of the week.

Daytime Fun in Hayes Valley

There's more to do in this neighborhood than just strolling up and down its picturesque sidewalks. Dip in a local café and talk to the baker. Explore a local boutique or artist's gallery. Peruse one of the many used bookstores.

There are several green spaces in Hayes Valley, including the artistic Patricia’s Green with its children’s playground and famed rotating public art space. The Koshland Community Park and Learning Garden features a large playground, a garden hill crisscrossed with pathways, outdoor workout equipment, and basketball courts. And of course, the infamous Alamo Square with its Painted Ladies is only a few blocks away.

Great Hayes Valley Schools

This is the ideal neighborhood for families looking for great schools. There are plenty of elementary, middle, and high schools that cater to different needs. The Chinese American International School is the perfect elementary school for parents looking to teach their kids Chinese. La Scuola International, the French American International School and the Creative Arts Charter School all serve the area as well.

For high schools, the Mission Dolores Academy is nearby. There are also plenty of preschool and daycare options that are extremely highly rated in the bounds of the neighborhood. Picking your child up from school has never been so easy; local schools are all within walking distance.

Going Out on the Town

There are tons of options for entertainment in the neighborhood. The San Francisco Jazz Center is in the heart of Hayes Valley, and residents head here at night for live music. The PROXY offers outdoor movies in the summertime, right next to Patricia’s Green.

Plenty of bars line the streets, and they all contribute to the character of the community in one way or another. The neighborhood is home to beer gardens, an absinthe bar, and the nation's first sake store. Since the neighborhood's culture is fluid and ever changing, you'll never need to worry about running out of activities. There will always be something new to do here. For example, Bars and Books is a local favorite that combines classic literature with creative cocktails. Brass Tacks brings back all the romance of the Gold Rush without all the grit.
