Go inside the hottest neighborhood in San Francisco, where home prices have appreciated over 110% in the last 6 years

Business Insider sent a reporter to spend an afternoon walking Bernal Heights and photographing it. Danielle was not interviewed for the piece. Where the article cites market data on how quickly homes there were selling and how far above asking, it credits BernalHeights.com, the neighborhood resource Danielle built with Michael Minson. The reporter's other real estate source in the piece was Michael himself, whom she met at an open house.

About the article

A walking tour of Bernal Heights, reported in photographs, tracing why a neighborhood once considered San Francisco's best-kept secret had become one of its most sought-after. Home prices had appreciated more than a hundred percent over the preceding six years, with the median two-bedroom around $1.58 million and houses selling in a median of sixteen days at thirteen percent above asking. The piece moved from the cafes and markets along Cortland Avenue to the summit of Bernal Hill, talking to a lifelong resident, a retired chemist who bought in the eighties, and a local agent who described the boom as golden handcuffs for longtime owners who liked the appreciation but could no longer afford to move.

Danielle's take

What earns this one a place on the page is not the article. It is the credit line.

When a national publication needed numbers on how fast Bernal Heights homes were selling, it took them from BernalHeights.com, a site Michael Minson and I built because the neighborhood deserved a proper resource of its own rather than a page buried inside a citywide brokerage website. Becoming the source a reporter reaches for takes longer than getting quoted, and I would argue it counts for more.

That work has now run for well over a decade. As of August 2026 I have been credited on 197 Bernal Heights sales, whether as the listing agent, as a co-listing agent alongside Michael, on the buyer side, or working with the buyer agents on my team. Michael has since moved abroad and stepped back from day-to-day real estate, but the partnership shaped how I came to understand this neighborhood.

What strikes me rereading the 2018 piece is how much of it still holds. The village feel, the small lots, the staircases through people's back gardens, the sense that people buy here on purpose rather than by default. Prices have moved considerably since that median two-bedroom figure, but the reasons people want to be here have not changed at all.

Nor has the tension the article identified. Longtime owners watching their equity climb while being unable to afford anything else in the city is still the defining Bernal problem, and it is the conversation I have most often with people who have lived here for twenty years and are trying to work out what their options actually are.
