Family-friendly, laid-back and charming, the Oakland neighborhood of Glenview has a small town feel, with its local businesses, tree-lined streets, and neighbors who wave as they walk by. A more affordable alternative to Rockridge or Temescal, & with a little more breathing room, Glenview is a comfortable and established neighborhood in the heart of Oakland. I love the feel of this neighborhood. Its location is perfect for a convenient commute to San Francisco, and it's a short drive to the hiking trails in Redwood Regional Park and Joaquin Miller Park located just north in the Oakland hills.
Developed in the 1920s and 30s, the neighborhood of Glenview flanks popular Park Blvd, north of I-580, east of Trestle Glen and Crocker Highlands, and just south of the hills of Piedmont and Oakmore. Greenery enthusiasts, parents, and dog owners alike will appreciate the beauty of Dimond Canyon Park, the lower portion running along the east edge of the neighborhood, providing a relaxing walking trail along Sausal Creek and the amenities of the Dimond Recreation Center.
The lower, east side of Glenview, offers a grid of long, straight, pretty blocks, perfect for walking, biking, and easy urban walks. I walk my dogs in this part of Glenview almost every night after work because it is quiet, safe, and so accessible. The upper, west side offers more hilly, windy streets, and typically larger, slightly more expensive homes.
On Park Blvd, the main thoroughfare that runs north and south from I-580 to Highway 13, you’ll come across the quaint business area that hosts a variety of eateries and small shops. Here you will find restaurants for every taste - Park Sushi, Marzano, Bellanico Restaurant & Wine Bar, Banana Blossom Thai restaurant, Blackberry Bistro (popular breakfast/brunch spot), and the brand new Rumbo Al Sur. The Savemore Market has just been renovated to now include a deli, and has a good selection of wine and fresh vegetables. Get your coffee fix next door at Ultimate Grounds Et Al Coffee & Tea. Along this stretch of Park Blvd. you will also find a laundry mat, locksmith, beauty and nail salons, flower shop, karate and dance studio, a cat clinic, postal store, cobbler, and Radioshack.
Tucked into the neighborhood, minutes from Park Blvd, is Glenview Elementary School. "With its diverse student population, its high level of parent involvement, along with strong administrative leadership, outstanding teachers and support staff, Glenview is a very special school and community" (from the Glenview Elementary School website). Six to eight graders in the area attend the highly-rated Edna Brewer Middle School.
Glenview is peppered with Mediterranean style homes, Craftsmen, and Bungalows. Pride of ownership is apparent, and the curb appeal of the homes throughout the neighborhood is attractive and inviting.
There are currently 12 active listings in Glenview, with a median price of $494,000. Eleven homes were sold in the last three months, with the median sold price being $542,000.
