Best Restaurants in the Inner Mission

February 14, 2019

The Inner Mission, San Francisco, has always been famous for its food culture, from the iconic Mission burrito to the Mission dog. But beyond the ubiquitous taquerias and street food, there is a huge restaurant presence, split between old standards and enticing upstarts. Like most people in the Mission, we’re eager foodies, so we’re glad to take some time to talk about some of our favorites, and to show prospective homeowners what we mean when we talk about trending food in the Inner Mission.

Mr. Pollo

Mr. Pollo might at a glance look like just another hole-in-the-wall (it’s run out of an old chicken shack, and the unprepossessing exterior and esoteric decor don’t exactly lend themselves to the suggestion of fine dining), but don’t be fooled by the simple appearance. Mr. Pollo’s prix fixe, four-course dinners are prepared on demand, behind the small counter. The fare is always changing, but never disappoints. At $30 per diner, it’s a great value, and it’s rapidly become a local hot-spot. It’s run by just two people, and with only eight seats for guests, it’s little wonder that the house is always packed. Be sure to make reservations well in advance, but make them soon. We can’t talk this place up highly enough.

Farmhouse Kitchen

Farmhouse Kitchen is another winner. To quote owner Kasem “Pop” Saengsawang, “[his] goal is to make sure people get enough spice.” Promising to “transport you to the streets of Thailand” guests are immediately greeted by old Thai melodies drifting through the welcoming, lively, casual-yet-trendy space. “We believe that Thai cuisine will never die,” continues Saengsawang, “We believe the spiciness will last long, forever.”

The restaurant would be assured of its place in Inner Mission foodie culture solely on the merits of the amazing food, but it goes the extra mile with an exciting atmosphere, friendly staff, and overwhelmingly playful experience. It’s a great place to start off a night with friends, or to close out a long week. Farmhouse Kitchen has excellent food, a great atmosphere, and a jovial spirit.

Taqueria El Farolito

If Farmhouse Kitchen is the it-place to start a night, Taqueria El Farolito might be the best place to close one out. We’re not going to say this is the best burrito in the city (at least not without a robust comments section) but if you’re looking for some amazing late-night Mexican food, this is a fantastic little spot. Don’t miss the tacos al pastor, but at $3.20 per taco, you might as well just have one of everything. Taqueria El Farolito, for all their many virtues, is cash-only, so do be sure to come prepared. There’s almost always a line, but don’t despair -- it moves quickly, and you’ll have a super burrito in your hands in no time.

Wise Sons Delicatessen

Wise Sons 24th Street location in the Mission is the flagship location of what’s new become a franchise. Everything is made in house, from the 7-hour hickory smoked pastrami right down to the bagels. “Dedicated to building community through traditional Jewish comfort food,” Wise Sons was founded in the Mission, where they “pair classic Jewish recipes with the best Californian ingredients.” Founder, entrepreneur, and chef Evan Bloom (who founded Wise Sons with his brother, Ari, and co-founder Leo Beckerman) is “widely regarded as one of the leaders in the modern Jewish food movement.”

It’s a comfortable all-day spot, offering incredible breakfasts (don’t miss the latkes!) and signature sandwiches ranging from a traditional Reuben (also available as a vegetarian option, with roasted mushroom) to a Chicken Fried Shawarma. The Pastrami Burgers are another local favorite, so “step inside and feel right at home!”

And while we’re on the subject of feeling right at home, now’s the perfect time to call Danielle Lazier + Associates, to get a conversation going about the Inner Mission, and what might make it the perfect spot for your next San Francisco real estate purchase. The market is always moving, so get in touch today to get started on buying or selling your dream home!
