About Bernal Heights
Village in the Heart of a City
Small-town, village vibes are the defining feature of the neighborhood (in addition to the eponymous Bernal Hill). Tucked away south of the Mission and east of Noe Valley, it’s not an area that attracts many tourists or through-traffic, which has helped to maintain its tight-knit feel despite growing interest from homebuyers over the past decade.
Bernal Heights is the kind of place where you greet friendly neighbors as you stroll with your dog to the local cafe, or enjoy community movie nights at Bernal Heights Park, or you’re known as a regular by vendors at the weekly farmers’ market. There’s a sense of community here that you don’t get as much in more central parts of the city.
Best View in Town
Set on Bernal Hill, many homes in the neighborhood offer some kind of view, with gorgeous outlooks over SF and the Bay. Atop the hill, Bernal Heights Park provides some of the best panoramic views anywhere in the city, as well as verdant hiking trails, a dog play area, and diverse wildlife enjoyed by birdwatchers and picnickers.
Top-Notch Amenities
The Cortland Corridor along Cortland Avenue features dozens of mom and pop shops, restaurants, cafes and artisans in addition to amenities like the Good Life Grocery and a lovely public library with one of the best toddler storytimes in town. It’s the main thoroughfare through Bernal Heights, and homes close by are highly desirable. The popular Alemany Farmers’ Market operates nearby every Saturday as well.
North Slope Micro-Neighborhood
The North Slope of Bernal heights offers dramatic views all the way to downtown, plus a great assortment of homes, amenities and local fare. Residents and prospective homebuyers love the blend of luxurious modern homes set amidst classic Victorians and mid-century architecture in this part of the neighborhood.
In addition to Bernal Heights Park just south, residents of the North Slope enjoy easy access to Precita Park, a sunny green space perfect for socially-distanced meetups with a playground and dog area. A number of cafes and restaurants surround Precita Park, and popular shopping and dining spots can be found nearby on Mission Street, the Cortland Corridor, and in the Mission District to the north.
Downtown and Neighboring Communities
Bernal Heights offers easy access to downtown and neighboring communities. If the shops and restaurants of the Cortland Corridor aren’t enough to meet all your needs, there are many more nearby in the Mission and Noe Valley.
Commuters love Bernal Heights for it’s easy access to Silicon Valley via 101 or 280 as well as the Bay Bridge and Downtown.
Pleasant Microclimate
Thanks to hilly areas to the west which block the cold, Bernal Heights is among the most temperate, least foggy communities in San Francisco. This makes Bernal Heights ideal for gardening, relaxing on the patio, or an afternoon jaunt with the dog to one of Bernal’s renowned local parks.
Parks and Playgrounds Galore
Speaking of parks, Bernal Heights is home to multiple parks and playgrounds, making it a great place for outdoor fun. There’s Bernal Heights Park, of course, with its incredible views, hiking trails, playground and off-leash space. Precita Park is on the North Slope, with a playground, green space and butterfly garden. Holly Park is found to the southwest, featuring a playground, basketball and tennis courts, athletic field and picnic tables. And Saint Mary’s Park and Rec Center includes a playground and gymnasium, various sport courts and facilities, and a dog play area.
Altogether, Bernal Heights parks include at least four public playgrounds, a plethora of dog-friendly spots, dozens of exercise options, and acres of greenspace. It’s all part of what makes Bernal Heights such a popular place to settle down.
Ample Housing Options
Bernal Heights showcases a great assortment of homes, while remaining more affordable than some other areas of the city. Bernal Heights features many single-family homes with exterior living space, always a hot commodity — but particularly these days.
The neighborhood has long attracted a mix of artists, musicians, tech workers and families looking to settle down in a charming part of town, while saving money compared to buying in a more expensive neighborhood like Noe Valley.
