Historic Clocktower Building

History

• Built as a warehouse in 1907 after the fire of 1906, and expanded in 1921, the Clocktower building served as headquarters for Max Schmidt Lithograph Company
• Schmidt Company was one of America’s great “label houses,” the largest on the west coast at the time
• When the Bay Bridge Aqueduct was built, city officials were persuaded against demolishing the clocktower by Mr. Schmidt himself
• Brick-and-timber structure converted into mixed-use condo and office space in 1992 by SF architect David Baker and firm McKenzie, Rose, & Halliday
